Day 1 and 2 - Merida and Mexico City Stops

It is time to start the adventure. The first leg, was a very uneventful, easy, painless, and short direct flight from Dallas to Merida.

A visit to Merida, Yucatan, had been on my list for a long time. This was a quick on-day visit to visit an architect friend of mine and to check on the economic, construction, and migration boom that Merida is experiencing. And, more importantly, on the spec house we are building together to test the market.

After landing, we visited a number of incredible housing developments to get a sense of what is going on here. Wow.

Amazing is the only word I can use to describe what is going on here. The architecture of some of these house is out of these world. Plus padel courts, palm trees, cenotes, and lakes everywhere in a nice pleasant breeze warm weather. Lots of possibilities and opportunities to think about. My head was spinning.

We had dinner at Crabster in front of the beach in Progreso which is only 15 minutes from Merida. Great lobster bisque, shrimp tacos, and the de rigueur nightly cappuccino when on vacation.

Unfortunately, the airline that flew from Yucatan to Cuba went bankrupt and ceased operations a couple of weeks ago so we had to reroute our trip through Mexico City.

Before going to the airport for my flight to Mexico City, we went to visit the historic central part of Merida to see the old colonial architecture and palace-like estates on the main avenue. Beautiful.

It is interesting how architecture and grand avenues like these transport you to a past that your mind makes up based on the limited information you possess. For example, I learned that hacienda and estate owners in this area were incredible rich because of huge henequen plantations to make high strength ropes for ships all over the world.

I had an uneventful and well organized flight on Volaris, one of Mexico’s up and coming new airlines, on a brand new Airbus A320 and had dinner with my mother who is doing amazingly well after her hip replacement surgery a month ago.
