Riding motorcycles in Cuba has always been on my list of things to do. Over the years, I have tried to figure out ways to rent, borrow, ship, import, buy, or even make a motorcycle in Cuba to no avail.
Shipping from Florida, Cancun, Bahamas, BVI, Panama, Colombia, Dominica Republic, yielded no solution. The constantly changing relationships between the US and Cuba and Cuba and its Latin American neighbors have not made the task easy either. At the end of the day, the conclusion had always been that it was impossible to do and that I would have to just wait until the starts aligned and there was a breakthrough somehow.
And, it finally happened. We found 5 BMW 800GS motorcycles that were imported to Cuba somehow a few years ago. So we set out to figure out how to rent them and how to decipher all the complex logistics required to make this trip finally a reality.
So, here we are 3 days from departure day making sure everything is ready. Hard to figure out what will be needed but among the things making the list are my SPOT satellite tracker, tools, micro start battery, air compressor, cash, full-blown motorcycle gear, and a few camping things just in case. The premise is that we will need to be as self-sufficient as possible just in case.
As always before the start of one of these motorcycle adventures, the excitement is beginning to build as all the waiting is now over. All the planning is finalized and in place. Now it is time to go see what this storied country is like and enjoy the sun, the beaches, the mountains, the roads, nature, the food, and the best part, its people.
